That’s two days backpacker budget in Thailand! So here I am in the dingy airport cafe. (Come to think of it at this cost I am probably going to spend the forty dollars on internet!) I know it’s a bit early in the trip to be totally skint but, let’s be honest, if I had lots of mullah I would hardly be spending 30 hours and 6 flights to get to Thailand in the first place!

So the travel officially started with the announcement that there would be a ‘slight delay’ to my flight leaving Melbourne because the cabin crew hadn’t arrived yet. Nice. Then once I was all seated and cosy, I hear two loud, American (nanny style) accents bustling their way down the plane aisle. I thought ‘yep, don’t even question it, I’m sure they are sitting next to me’ and how right I was. From that moment on all my visions of snuggling up with a magazine, hot chocolate and iPod, dreamily staring out the window, were long forgotten. Actually turned out to be bloody hilarious, spent most of the flight laughing about the fact that we call ‘sandals’ thongs and exchanging travel stories in manner of bill Bryson. Excellent start to the trip.

So that brings me to The Alice. I kind of forgot how much ‘nothing’ Australia has. And how beautiful that nothing is. So much red, so vast! So dry. Anyway, two very strange things have happened to me since landing – 1. After eying me off suspiciously, a man came up to me and asked me if I would like to buy some weed. Seriously, like in the airport! Right in front of the check in desks! I managed to decline politely whilst trying to bail in the other direction. Fortunately he walked off in search of his next target. Can’t imagine he does a good trade… random!

2. I was lazily walking through security when the guard walked straight in front of me and said ‘will you please step into this room’ Clearly I was beside myself, especially because of the weed incident. Just as I was wondering if they would have facebook access inside the Alice springs prison, he said ‘you have been randomly selected to have a drug test undertaken on you and your bags blah blah do you agree blah blah (coz I’m sure I could have said ‘nah ill pass!’ and walked away! do you agree? puff!) and then he made me stand like a scarecrow whilst he sprayed this stuff that smelled like wet dog (ewww) all over me and then suspiciously traced around my body with a metal pole thing. Then I had to wait for 5 mins whilst this machine (like the one on border patrol ha-ha) decided my fate. I thought he was about to yell at me or tell me to stand up straight, but as soon as it was negative for drugs he was all ‘cya love, have a great flight!’ weird…

So this is only a few hours in and it’s already and adventure. Oh travelling, how I have missed you. I better go now and have one of those coin-operated showers before my next flight because I’m pretty sure I still smell like wet dog. Sexy
