What do you plan to do once you get out of school this summer? While you can go travel as a tourist, or just stay at home and relax, there is another idea that is been becoming more and more popular among socially conscious teens with a real desire to help people in need and make the world a better place. Have you considered travelling abroad as a volunteer? Today, many teens are spending their summer breaks traveling the world, helping people in need and experiencing completely different cultures and societies.
If the idea of attending a teen camp appeals to you, then you should sign up and enjoy the opportunity to give back. What are your skills? How can you help? Beyond this, you also should be sure that the cause is important enough to you to stick it out. Remember volunteering abroad is not just a holiday, you will be expected to care, to work and to participate fully. Therefore, it is important to be sure you have something to contribute and a willingness to do so.
After you have figured out the issues described above, the next step is to find a volunteer program that works well with your skills and intentions. While there are some government backed programs and religious organizations that run volunteer programs, more often than not these outfits have the resources to have full time aid workers as opposed to volunteers. However, much of good work being done around the world today is being done by secular non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Some NGOs are certainly well funded and have resources, but many of them are desperate for volunteers and already operate regular volunteer programs.
You can find these NGOs and usually detailed information about their volunteer programs on the Internet. This can be time consuming because most volunteer programs have strict guidelines and terms which may not be compatible with your intentions or requirements. Nevertheless, once you actually start looking you will realize that there truly are thousands of NGO sponsored volunteer programs that would be perfect for teenagers looking to spend their summer break productively.
