The Angel of Death Row – Illinois Times

Angel of Death Row: My Life as a Death Penalty Defense Lawyer. Andrea D. Lyon. Kaplan Publishing, 2010. Hardcover. .95. Kindle edition .99, contains only “A Mother Accused,” a single chapter of the hardcover book.

Andrea Lyon was dubbed the “Angel of Death Row” in an article in the Chicago Tribune. She was the first woman to be lead counsel in a death penalty trial in Illinois. She began her career at the Cook County Public Defender’s Office, and she worked her way up to chief of the Homicide Task Force, a 22-lawyer unit that represents people accused of homicide. She claims the stories she tells are true, and that is darn scary. Her cases include an abused wife, an ex-police officer, a gang member and a psychotic who refused to use the insanity defense. In each case, and there are several others, she claims she learned something about life and something more about how to maneuver the maze that is our justice system.

According to Lyons, when she first joined the Chicago Homicide Task Force, there were four extremely bad jurists in the system: The Hanging Judge was known to brag that he had sent more men to death row than most states had. The Corrupt Judge could be bribed. If he wasn’t paid off, he came down like a hammer. The Vicious Judge was perpetually angry, an  ex-prosecutor known for the particular delight he took in winning death sentences. The final member of this “worst of the worst” club was The Bigot. He was closed-minded foul-tempered, and had earned a reputation as a tool of the state.

She claims that some judges will rule differently in election years. Lyon also dealt with what most women in men’s professions endured 30 years ago: judges who mocked and humiliated her and made demeaning comments about her weight and gender in open court.

Although the Task Force investigates the crime looking for new evidence, witnesses or mitigating circumstances and goes over trial transcripts looking for grounds for appeals, usually its job is to reverse the death sentence to life in prison without parole. Lyon gives extreme and complex examples of capital trials and frankly discusses the unbalanced conviction and penalty rates among the poor. She portrays herself as hardworking, forthright and outspoken. She is a good story with a penchant for irony. I especially appreciated the description of the Supreme Court building in Springfield, and the reverence she accorded it when arguing her first case there.

If there is a misstep, it is that her personal story (which is now and then juxtaposed with her cases) is poorly integrated. For example, she tells us about Juliette, a woman who murdered her abusive lover, and her testimony that became a true horror story, and then she says that driving home: “I couldn’t help thinking of my own life in comparison.” She goes on to talk about her dating life. While she admits that compared to Juliette’s life, hers is “a fairy tale,” it was still a third-rate transition.

This book is about the world of corruption that hides behind the law, where wealth and social status play too large a role in determining who is convicted and who goes home. I think most of us know these problems exist on some level, but knowing it and seeing it are two different things. Lyon puts a face on that corruption; she humanizes its victims. Readers may find themselves reconsidering the death penalty. If they remain in favor of it, they will not be able to deny that the system needs fixed.

Martha Miller is a widely published Springfield author. Her fifth book, Retirement Plan, is due out in May 2011. Her website is www.marthamiller.net.

  • Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair “Demolition Man” Overeem’s decision to focus on K-1 kickboxing in the fall is paying off so far.

Overeem knocked down Australian veteran Ben Edwards three times in the first round of their bout Saturday in Seoul at the K-1 World Grand Prix 2010 Final 16. The Strikeforce titleholder made the final eight of the K-1 World GP for the second consecutive year; he made the semifinals last year before losing to eventual champion Badr Hari.

Edwards tried to overwhelm his opponent from the start with streams of punches, but Overeem simply covered up and waited for openings to counter. He dropped Edwards twice with single overhand rights, and put him away with a left hook-right hook combination.

Other mixed martial arts veterans who won Saturday include Siala-Mou “Mighty Mo” Siligia and Semmy Schilt, who has won four of the last five K-1 World GP titles.

The Netherlands continued to showcase its longtime strength in kickboxing. Four-time GP champion Peter Aerts also won Saturday to join fellow Dutchmen Overeem and Schilt in the final eight. Fighters from Holland have won fourteen of the 17 World GP tournaments completed so far.

Strikeforce hoped to have Overeem defending his MMA belt this month or in December, but while promoters were still considered possible opponents, he committed himself to K-1, where he also harbors ambitions of winning a title.

The Social Network’s Justin Timberlake Talks Sean Parker – ScreenCrave.com

    Oct 01, 2010 – By Krystal Clark

Justin Timberlake and Sean Parker 1 12 09 kc The Social Networks Justin Timberlake Talks Sean Parker

Today, we’ll see if Justin Timberlake really has what it takes as an actor. The former boy bander and Grammy award winner has spent the last few years honing his acting craft. With David Fincher’s The Social Network he gets a prime opportunity to show us what he’s got. In the film he plays Sean Parker, the founder of the controversial music site Napster and future president of Facebook. Even though Parker is alive and well, Timberlake never had a real conversation with the man, so how did it pull off his picture perfect portrayal?

When asked about his preparation for the part, Timberlake admitted that he met Parker briefly before he was even in talks for the role.

Justin Timberlake: I briefly bumped into him in New York one time, but we spoke for probably all of two minutes. And, ironically, I met him before I was cast in the role. There was about a 3 week period where I was going through an audition process that it had been announced that I was going to play the role. We met briefly. He seemed to be very nice, but we didn’t really talk about much. He just mentioned that he had read the script and he thought that I was going to be playing the part. I think that when I read the first two scenes, I thought, ‘How can you not love this guy?’ His brashness, his sort of cynical wit, his brilliance just popped off the page.

We’re not sure how in depth Timberlake’s research was but he managed to pull off a cool and confident performance that exudes the bravado that Parker is known for.

The Social Network is in theaters now.

Do you think Timberlake has what it takes to pull this off?

Armie Hammer Recalls Playing Batman In Canceled ‘Justice League’ Movie.com

With Marvel’s “The Avengers” on the horizon, many fans are wondering when DC Entertainment will announce a “Justice League” film. There’s no indication of when or if such an announcement will be made, but fans nearly had a “Justice League” movie to call their own three years ago before it got canceled — largely thanks to the Writers Guild of America strike in 2007.

“The Social Network” star Armie Hammer was one of the young actors cast in “Justice League Mortal,” a film that never got off the ground but came quite close. Hammer, who would have played Batman in the film, recently spoke with MTV News and recalled the events that led up to the project’s termination.

“We had gotten a long way into pre-production,” said Hammer about the ill-fated Australia-set production. “We were about to start shooting when the writer’s strike happened at the end of 2007, and then the Australian government denied a 40% tax rebate that they thought they were going to have, so a lot of things just when wrong.”

“It’s unfortunate,” he continued, “because the amount of work that was already done — I mean, they had finished pre-production and they were a couple of days away from starting to shoot, so it’s a shame that nobody got to see all of the work that got put into it.”

But Hammer has a positive outlook on the situation, taking a silver lining away from the film’s cancellation: “At the same time, it was a great experience to get to go to Australia for a month and a half!”

On top of that, it’s hard to complain about playing the Caped Crusader, even if Hammer only wore the superhero’s costume a handful of times in pre-production.

“I loved it,” Hammer said of wearing Batman’s costume. “But I didn’t even get a picture of it!

Are you disappointed that “Justice League Mortal” never got off the ground? Tell us what you think in the comments section and on Twitter!
