I am planning a 30-day visit to Europe (Paris, Madrid, Barcelona, Rome, Venice, Munich, Amsterdam, Brussels) on a budget during March of this year, therefore would like to stay in backpacker hostels. I shall be with a group of 5 persons. Everybody of the group intends to make it as cheap as possible. Now, should we book our stay in backpacker in advance before coming to each city or I can get vacant rooms on arrival?

1 night in advance!
have fun my friend……
It’s really a good idea to book them ahead, just for peace of mind. However, March isn’t really high season for tourists, so I doubt that you’d need to book too far in advance.
If you are in a group it is a very good idea to book ahead, especially when you want to get the cheapest rates and stay together all in one dorm.
But even if you don’t it shouldn’t be a problem to find something – March is still very much low season. Call the hostel 1-2 days in advance and everything should be fine.
In Munich I can recommend the Meininger. In Venice and Rome the cheapest places to stay are http://www.plusvillages.com/
Bring silverware and a plastic plate to make sandwiches and maybe cooking gear (british army issue or similar) to heat canned soup or so. This way you can budget 5 EUR per day for food, giving you more money to have fun.
It’s a good idea to book ahead if you are organised enough but the whole idea of back packing is flexibility isnt it ! In practice you can nearly always find a hostel place – particularly in March
