Going to northern Uganda in October-does anyone have some travel tips?

Is there some food you thought was amazing? A specific type of bugspray that worked the best? How rainy is it really during October? Please- only those who have traveled to Uganda! I’ve been to Kenya too, so thanks, but I don’t want travel tips from and for Kenya.

learn the fundamentals of kiswahili. The nyamachuma is excellent if you are not a vegetarian. Take all natural bugspray. Remember to cover most of your body at night and sleep under a mosquito net

I’ve lived for over a year in Uganda, but I’ve never visited Northern Uganda, which has been ravaged by civil war for decades.

Before you worry about what types of bugspray to buy and what sorts of food you’ll be eating, first of all you need to prepare yourself mentally for seeing very difficult living conditions of generations of people displaced, orphaned, widowed, and traumatized by war. My fiance did some work in Northern Uganda for the UN and came back overwhelmed with sadness for the situation there. I know others who have worked in Northern Uganda and have come back traumatized from everything they saw. Please be prepared for this, and read as much as you can about the political situation there before you go.

Also make sure you have safe travel plans in Northern Uganda. Unlike the rest of Uganda which is extremely safe, there are security issues in the North. Most people vehmently recommend against ‘war tourism’ whereby people visit just to see a humanitarian crisis. If you are doing work there, it’s a different story.

In terms of food, I can tell you about Southern Uganda (where I’ve spent a lot of time living) but don’t know how it compares to Northern Uganda. In the south they eat a lot of matooke (steamed green bananas) with sauces made out of different types of meats, beans, vegetables, or peanuts. That is the staple food. I think in Northern Uganda, they will eat more cassava and rice and pumpkin. My favorite Uganda foods are matooke and ‘g-nut’ (peanut) sauce with mushrooms. The fruit is also absolutely amazing! Fresh pineapples, mangoes, papayas, watermelons, passion fruit, bananas. Eat as much fruit as possible (I usually soak mine in diluted bleach water before eating to get rid of any bacteria/bugs)

I never used bugspray when I lived in Uganda unless I was going camping or something. I used some bug spray when I knew I would be outdoors in the evening for a long time, but it wasn’t any special type. Just make sure you sleep under a bed net and make sure you take malaria prophylaxis.

October can be rainy but it’s not as bad as I expected it would be. During the rainy seasons it usually just rains really, really hard for an hour or two every day or so, and then the sun comes out and it’s hot again.

Good luck in Uganda. It’s a beautiful country and I hope you’ll fall in love with it like I did!
