Swiss Ranger Volcano Stove Boil Test 1

In this video I do a boil test using an Esbit cube in my new Swiss Ranger Volcano Stove. One Esbit cube did not bring to cups of water, starting at 50 degrees, to a rolling boil. This is not a failure on the part of the stove but rather that Esbit alone is not a good fuel for it.

The soda can is blocking the free passage of air from the circular vent holes to the fuel. The esbit will be fine on the base of the stove, as will the stove. Tin plate under the fuel should help stabilise the burn. Close up the square port and the circular lower vents will jet air onto the fuel. That large port looks like its for burning wood, you would need a steel wire fire basket.

I think the best fire source might be either a large alcohol pad burner or a buddy (wax) burner.

Great Test! Anybody ever heard of a “storm kettle?” You can see one @ “LEHMAN’s” on line.

I am happy to report that the MOLLE sleeve fit this stove perfectly.

I have used a gammo pellet container to act as a tealight stove with alcohol and it boiled the smaller cup. I’ll have to investigate other fuels. Thanks Hiram.

The stove I made for my buddies was made from a small 5.5 oz juice can. At first it was to big to fit in through the side but I made another that fit through the side and could be filled while inside. He gets a boil time of around 5-6 min and it burns about a total of 10 min!

About 12% of the needed energy to boil two cups of water is going into the aluminum in raising it to100C.

That would be an option, if I were to use twigs, it wouldn’t matter I would assume if it had a bottom.
A SIGG 32 Oz bottle apparently fits perfectly as a replacement. The MOLLE will definately fit my Jetboil if it can’t be used for this. I’ll find out once it gets here.
I also picked up the mess kit, locally the large trangia burner is more expensive on it’s own, it’s a steal.

The smaller Trangia stove fits but I haven’t tried the larger one yet. Problem is the burner has to be slide in from the top of the stove and taken out the same way. I have to rig some sort of handle for the burner. Neither will fit thru the larger slot on the bottom which is just large enough to feed wood in thru there. Almost half the stove would have to be cut away to fit the Trangia in thru the side. I thought of maybe cutting the whole bottom off so the stove could be set over a burner.

I saw that post about the MOLLE-010. Really nice bag. The problem is the set is about 10 1/2″ tall in it’s standard configuration. I think the cup would have to be inserted into the stove, without the bottle and without the wire handles in order to fit into the MOLLE-010. That might not be a bad idea anyway. I had been thinking about cutting the bottle to make it into another pot since I don’t really need it to carry water. Cut the bottle and invert the cup then the wires aren’t needed anyway.

Hi Craig. Yes I have several more boil tests planned. I’ll probably even do one with wood even though it will tanish this beautiful little set. LOL

Try again with prewarmed water. What’s the boil time for solid fuel in a standard set up?

I have one of those, Hiram. Are you going to do a test with an alcohol burner?
    Craig

Hiram, you are fast. Too bad about the Esbit, I just bought one from Cheaper than Dirt, along with one of the MOLLE-010 packs that might hold it- from what I have read anyways. We’ll see. Do you think the commercial Trangia would fit through the bottom slot? will it get too hot? That’s my plan, being able to slide an alcohol stove through the bottom instead of dropping it down. Thanks for the fast updates!
