Use a Backpack for your Carryon Luggage

Use a Backpack for your Carryon Luggage

Using a backpack for your carryon luggage has many advantages. Airlines typically allow you to carry on one piece of luggage, so you want to make sure that what you carry on has the most available storage space and allows you to carry what you want. A backpack meets these needs.

To get the most of your backpack that you are using for carryon luggage, it is important to choose the right backpack for the job. The backpack must be small enough to fit in the overhead compartment of the airplane, so an external framed backpack is out of the question. Instead, choose a backpack with an internal frame or no frame at all.

The style of backpack that you use for a carryon is very much dependent on how you plan to use your luggage. Many people that will only be gone for a few days choose to carry on everything they want, to avoid the hassle of checking luggage. Others use their carryon bag as a place to carry only what they believe they will want on the flight.

Here are some things to look for when selecting a backpack that will be your sole piece of luggage:

· A generous sized body. The main area of the backpack should be large enough to pack clothes as well as toiletries and other items you will need for your trip. Some backpacks, even those that are large, are broken down into small compartments. This makes it impossible to pack them as full as you may need.

· Sturdy zippers. A backpack that has zippers on either end of the main body allows for more expansion than one that only zips in one direction. The zippers should be rugged and sewn into the backpack with heavy thread. A flimsy zipper won’t last long if you have your backpack packed to capacity.

· Several small outside pouches. You don’t want to have to root through an entire weekends worth of clothes to access your mp3 player or a book while you are on the plane. Make sure that there are ample areas to store items you will want to have access to during the flight.

If you are planning to use your carryon bag only for items that you will need on the flight, you may want a different type of backpack. Some items to look for in this type of backpack include:

· A divided body. This allows you to organize your belongings so that you know exactly where everything is. This is a particularly good idea if you are traveling with children. By dividing up your belongings, you can instantly grab a snack, a sweatshirt or a book. Nothing is more frustrating than trying to unload your entire carryon bag, on your lap, squeezed beside a stranger.

· Outside pockets. These are great for a water bottle, a rolled up magazine or some other item that you want quick access to.

When shopping for a backpack, whether for your only piece of luggage or for use only as a carryon, keep these things in mind:

· The backpack should be comfortable. One of the main advantages of a backpack is that it provides you with a hands free way of carrying your belongings. It is not enough to put it on your back while it is empty and assume that it fits. Instead, fill it with some weight and walk around with it on. Try it out at home, packed with some clothing, or just stick a bag of pet food inside to test it out.

Once you have weight in the bag, put it over both shoulders and walk around the house. Go up and down stairs, lean over, squat down and generally move in every direction. It may be necessary to adjust the shoulder straps of the backpack to get the optimum fit, but you should be comfortable once everything is adjusted. If you have to continually pull on the straps, slide them away from your neck, or otherwise adjust them, the backpack doesn’t fit properly.

· The backpack should be a certain size. The backpack should be large enough for what you want it to carry. If you try to stuff more into your backpack than it is designed to carry, the zippers will pop and your backpack will be worthless. Nothing is more frustrating than this happening at the airport. If you cannot zip the backpack shut easily while it is fully packed, you should either pare down what you are taking or invest in a larger backpack.

Using a backpack allows you to have a hands free way to navigate through airports. A little time before you head out on your trip can save you from huge headaches later on in your travels.

Backpack Styles: Which is best for you?

Backpack Styles: Which is best for you?

Whether you are an avid trekker or a student whose longest hike is across your college’s campus, the backpack style that you choose can, quite literally, make or break your back. If you are in the market for a new backpack you will find yourself faced with hundreds of choices and styles. Between internal frames and external frames, padded straps and cubic inches of packing space, there is a lot more to consider than simply the aesthetic appeal of a backpack. The question is how do you decide which backpack is the best backpack style for you?

The best way to determine which backpack to buy is to ask yourself a series of questions to narrow down your choices.

Why do you need a backpack?

The first question that you need to answer is why you need a backpack in the first place? How will you use it? A backpack that would be used to carry all of your belongings on a trek across Europe should offer far different features than one that is used to carry diapers and formula for your daily runs around town. Likewise, if you are heading out on a long distance trip through mountainous terrain or the woods, you could benefit greatly from bringing along a pack that can carry a lot of equipment comfortably without being too heavy.

A day pack is meant for light trekking, when carrying a lot of gear and weight is not an issue. If your main use for a backpack is to haul stuff around with you for use during the day, then a day pack like the Travel Gear Ur Gear Backpack will work just fine. The DadGear Basic Black Diaper Backpack is a daypack with special features designed specifically for parents toting along an infant or toddler. Other daypacks are designed with students in mind and offer features like outside pockets for MP3 players and cell phones.

The second type of backpack is the assault pack, which is larger than a day pack to allow you to carry more gear. Assault packs often have a frame to help distribute weight more evenly across your back and shoulders. It is the kind of pack you want if you are planning on a full day trip, or a day trek up a mountain or into the woods.

A pack like the High Peak Black Diamond Backpack is the ideal compromise between a lightweight day pack and a full pack meant for longer expeditions. The High Peak Black Diamond features over 1,500 cubic inches of packing space, foam-padded shoulder straps and a chest and hip belt to help keep the pack attached to where it belongs on your body. It also includes hiking features like holders for a shovel, ice axe and snowboard. While it does not have an internal frame, it does feature a removable aluminum support bar to give the backpack additional strength. Finally, it is compatible with hydration systems for packing along filtered water and making it easy to access while trekking.

If you are intending an all-out expedition lasting a week or more, then you should consider a full pack, which are backpacks that have room for all the gear you’ll need to survive in the woods for weeks. Most full packs have either an internal or an external frame, and can offer as much as 6,000 cubic inches of packing space. A full pack backpack like the High Peak Katmandu 70 + 10 Internal Frame Backpack may offer features like a full rain cover including hood to keep you and your gear dry in wet weather. Look for additional features like a bottom zipper to allow access to the bottom of the main compartment and multiple places to attach other gear on the outer backpack.

How does it fit?

Adjustable straps are all well and good, but some backpacks are a better fit than others. A backpack that does not fit comfortably can leave you with an aching back, or tire you out to the point where you have to quit hiking early. Some points to watch out for include:

Chest straps that can help stabilize a heavy backpack, but may not be comfortable for most women because they fit across the chest. A foam padded back frame can fit the backpack snugly against your back, making it much easier to support. A hip belt, waist belt, or both are musts, but it is important that the belts hit the right place on your torso.

When choosing a backpack, measure your torso instead of your full height. If you are planning on doing a lot of backpacking, be sure to get a backpack that has a fully adjustable frame.

How much packing space do you need?

What can you fit into 1,000 cubic inches? How about 5,000 cubic inches? In general, the following rules of thumb apply:

If you are selecting a pack for day trips or around the town use, then you should be fine with a day pack that has a capacity of up to 1,500 cubic inches. Kids’ backpacks can be proportionally smaller. If you plan on taking weekend trips or doing light backpacking and hiking, then you may want a backpack that’s substantially larger. A capacity of 1,750 to 3,000 cubic inches will provide plenty of packing room for clothes and gear for one person on a weekend camping trip.

If you are carrying gear for more than one person, or for an extended trip, look for a full pack with over 3,000 cubic inches of packing space. A full pack with an external frame will distribute weight evenly and make your backpacking trip a pleasure.

Choose a Proper Backpack for Your Child in This Autumn Vacation

Choose a Proper Backpack for Your Child in This Autumn Vacation

After the autumn vacation, back-to-school shopping season is under way, with parents buying all of the new supplies that soon will be loaded into their child’s backpack. So choosing a proper backpack as a gift for your child’s autumn vacation will be a very good idea. As parents make decisions on how to budget for supply purchases and what products to buy, the Association of New Jersey Chiropractors wants them to keep their child’s health in mind when selecting a backpack.

There are so many backpacks to choose from, and choosing the right one for your child is not always easy. Backpacks come in all sizes, colors, fabrics, and shapes—all of which help kids express their own sense of style. As practical as backpacks are for those who use them, backpacks can cause strained muscles and joints and back pain when worn incorrectly.

The human spine is made up of 33 bones called vertebrae, and between the vertebrae are discs that act as shock absorbers. When something heavy—such as a backpack filled with books—is incorrectly placed on your child’s shoulders, the force of that extra weight can pull your child backwards. To compensate, your child may bend forward at the hips or arch his or her back, which can cause your child‘s spine to compress unnaturally. Because of the heavy weight he or she is carrying, your child might begin to develop shoulder, neck, and back pain.

“It is estimated that at least half of all student backpacks are too heavy for children to be carrying,” the group’s vice president Brett Wartenberg said. “As a result, doctors and chiropractors are seeing more children than ever complaining of back pain, which can have long-term health implications.”

Along with back pain, students can suffer from headaches, posture problems and various other health problems.

What can we do about this? The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that before you purchase a backpack, look for the following five criteria:

Choose a lightweight backpack that doesn’t add a lot of weight to your child’s load. For example, although leather backpacks look cool, they weigh more than traditional canvas backpacks.
Choose a backpack with two wide, padded shoulder straps. Straps that are too narrow can dig into shoulders.
Choose a backpack that has a padded back, which provides increased comfort and protects the wearer from being poked by sharp edges (such as pencils, rulers, notebooks, etc.) inside the backpack.
Choose a backpack that has a waist belt, which helps distribute the weight more evenly across the body.
Choose a backpack that has multiple compartments, which also helps distribute weight more evenly.

Although you choose the proper backpack for your child, the health of your child can not be guaranteed. Because the may carry the backpack in wrong ways. Many kids wear their backpacks over just one shoulder, which is the wrong thing to do. This makes the person lean to one side to offset the extra weight, and they might develop lower and upper back pain and strain their shoulders and neck. Wearing the backpack incorrectly can also lead to poor posture. So, make sure your children wear the backpack using both straps. It’s also a good idea to tighten the straps enough for the backpack to fit close to the body, and it should sit 2 inches above the waist.

In order to make your kids carry the backpack in proper way, we give the following suggestions:

Face the backpack before you lift it.
Bend at the knees.
Using both hands, check the weight of the backpack.
Lift with your legs, not your back.
Carefully put one shoulder strap on at a time; never sling the backpack onto one shoulder.

Proper backpack with proper style and color will add more fun as well as health to your children’s life. We hope everybody child have a proper backpack and spend a very easy and happy childhood.
