who can give me some travel tips on anti-theft?

I lost my cellphone several days ago when I was visiting somewhere. There were many people around and I was busy buying some staff. Before I was aware of what happened I found my cellphone’d gone.
I’m now regret putting it into the sidepocket and want to find more tips on anti-theft…

keep small items in your front pockets or in SMALL purse with zipper on it.

Get a fanny pack… yes you look dorky but it is in front of you all the time someone would have to have you really distracted to get into it!

Keep your passport in your pocket or somewhere so no one can see or where you can see at all times. Get a Fannypack you look dumb but you can always see everything you have!

If you DO get a fanny pack (I have one when I travel on holiday), make sure to get one with thick, hidden wire cords in the belt straps …otherwise fanny pack belts are easy to cut from behind. Make sure the buckle is in FRONT and not in the back or they can be unbuckled easily and taken.

Also, if your purse or case is of thin material, people can slice it open from behind and grab items. Travel purses should be ZIPPERED and not gapping open from the top like many fashion purses nowadays.

Leave excess credit cards and such home, take the minimal number you need with you and photocopy the numbers and phone numbers to call if they are stolen.

Make sure your home address is not displayed to all on your luggage tag, or you could find your house robbed when you come back. Many tags are “hidden”.

When you go through airport security and you have more than one person, have one person go through first and collect the items on the other side. The other person should stay BEFORE the security until all the items are in the xray machine or beyond, do NOT let them intimidate you to go through security until all your things are accounted for.

If you are seriously phobic about luggage access by airport personnel while your luggage is checked by the airline or by a hotel, don’t get a zippered suitcase, get a “clamshell”. Even if you have the best locks, it takes all of 1 minute to poke open the zipper teeth and get items…they can even rezipper the luggage so it looks like it was never open. Expensive-looking zippered suitcases are targeted more frequently.

Do NOT make or say phone card and credit card information if someone looks like they are listening to you…I had my phone card number stolen from me in the airport of Mexico City and was SURE I was keypunching the numbers fast enough that the person in back of me could not remember or see it…was stupidly wrong.

Take your purse or bag with you if you use the airplane bathroom and you are traveling alone…don’t leave it under your seat unattended. Close and lock your briefcase or overnighter if you can.

You should put your passport and travel docs and any excess cash in the hotel room safe or use the one usually near the lobby.

If you want the hotel to “hold your luggage for a while” after checkout, make sure they put it in the secure storage closet and give you a claim ticket…don’t let them persuade you that “it is safe in the lobby corner until you get back”.
